Or is it Marinara? Or maybe red gravy? Whatever you want to call it, this red tomato sauce will knock your socks off.
It starts with a rich base of flavor from onions, garlic and red wine and simmered slowly for 20 minutes. It’s got nice, thick body from using crushed tomatoes. Packed with flavor and finished within 30 minutes flat!
Use the best quality crushed tomatoes you can find. For an extra $2 a can, it’s well worth it. Get yourself a tube of nice tomato paste as well – comes in handy for all sorts of sauce work.

- 1 2 Qt pot
Ingredients
- 1/2 cup Onion - diced
- 2 TBSP EVOO
- 2 cloves Garlic - grated
- 1 tsp Oregano, dried
- 1 tsp Basil, dried
- 1/2 tsp Crushed red pepper - optional
- 1 TBSP Tomato Paste
- 1 LG leaf Basil - crushed
- 1/3 Cup Red wine
- 28 oz Crushed Tomato - use quality!
- Kosher salt - to taste
Instructions
- Heat pot over MED/LOW add EVOO. Lightly sautee onion (no color). + garlic, cook 1 min. + dried spices and salt. + tomato paste and mix together until uniform paste, cook 1 min.
- + basil leaf and red wine, reduce by half. 2-3 min.
- + crushed tomatoes, combine thoroughly. LOW simmer, uncovered, 20 min. Check for salt final 5 minutes. Heat off. Remove basil. Cool 5 min to serve.
